Launch of a new challenge to develop solutions to tackle bias in AI systems

The Fairness Innovation Challenge, led by the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation, will drive the development of new solutions to address bias and discrimination in AI systems.

Fairness in AI is of significant interest to government, academia, and practitioners, specifically making sure that AI systems are advancing in a safe and responsible way.

The Fairness Innovation Challenge, led by the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) and delivered with Innovate UK, will drive the development of new solutions to address bias and discrimination in AI systems.

For the challenge, participants will develop socio-technical solutions to address bias and discrimination in AI systems. Through this approach – looking at the social and cultural context of how AI systems are developed as well as the technology itself – the solutions can address the wide range of biases that can occur in AI systems.

The Fairness Innovation Challenge will open for applications on Monday 16 October 2023.

Successful proposals will receive grant funding to develop their solutions and work alongside our partners, UK regulators, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

The EHRC and the ICO will support winners to  test how their solutions align with relevant regulation including the Equality Act 2010 and the UK GDPR/Data Protection Act 2018 and will use learnings from the challenge to inform their own regulatory guidance.
